Happy New Year, dear readers! As we head into the end ofJanuary, a month synonymous with fresh starts and new beginnings, I want to take a moment to reflect on the unique journey many of us are about to embark on—entering the Empty Nest phase, or finally tackling our already Empty Nest head on. Whether your youngest is preparing to graduate high school in the coming months, gearing up for college, or already out of the nest, this transition is filled with so many possibilities. It’s the perfect time to ignite your excitement for what lies ahead!

One Small Step Can Lead to Big Change

Instead of overwhelming yourself with lofty resolutions, why not choose one meaningful goal to focus on this year? The idea here isn’t to set a massive goal but rather to take consistent, baby steps toward something you truly desire. This approach can create a ripple effect in your life, ultimately leading to significant transformation over time. Just like compound interest in finance, it’s the time and dedication you invest in small actions that will yield beautiful results.

Consider this: if you dedicate just a few minutes each day to a goal—be it reconnecting with an old hobby, nurturing a budding friendship, or exploring a new passion—you’ll be amazed at how these small steps can culminate into profound change. Remember this, if you work on something for 18 minutes a day that compounds to over 100 hours in one year.  Imagine looking back a year from now and realizing that those tiny, consistent efforts have not only added joy to your life but have also shaped a new version of yourself.

Reflecting on the Past, Embracing the Present, Planning for the Future

This time of year is a great time to pick up a copy of my book, Almost Empty Nester, and dive into the reflection exercises within. When it’s cold outside, I love to snuggle up on the couch with a warm blanket, a cup of tea and a good book. In the Almost Empty Nester we delve into this transformative journey across three key sections: the past, the present, and the future.

  • The first seven chapters invite you to reflect on your Past, your experiences as a mother, creating a highlight reel that honors your journey, and getting a highlight reel from our children (my favorite part!) It’s important to look back at the past and take a pause before we create our future.

  • The middle section encourages you to examine the Present, your current beliefs about Empty Nesting, and what your current passions are. Maybe they’re the ones you’ve had your whole life, or maybe you have something new you are interested in pursuing. Either way, this section helps you figure that out. We also discuss if you have fears and doubts that might be holding you back? This is the ideal time to confront those feelings and replace them with empowering thoughts that will propel you forward.

  • Finally, the last seven chapters focus on envisioning your future. Here, we craft a personalized game plan for this exciting new chapter of your life. By taking proactive steps now, you can shape the future you desire, attracting new opportunities and experiences along the way.

Join Our Exclusive Book Club!

To further support your journey, I’m thrilled to announce the launch of an exclusive virtual book club starting in March! This is a fantastic opportunity for those who purchase the Almost Empty Nester bundle, which includes both the book and the Reflection Journal. The Reflection Journal is your essential companion to the Almost Empty Nester book; filled with 21 transformative exercises, available here, or exclusively on our website in three weeks. By joining the book club, you’ll connect with like-minded women who are equally excited about navigating this phase of life.

Over four weeks, we’ll work through the Reflection Journal together, sharing insights, challenges, and triumphs. And as a special treat, we’ll wrap up the experience with a unique virtual event just for our book club members! It’s a chance to celebrate your progress and foster connections that can last well beyond the book club.

Be Proactive About Change

As we enter this new year, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on what changes you want to embrace. Do you want to redefine your identity now that your children are growing up? Are there passions you’ve set aside that you’d like to reignite? Let’s not wait until the moment arrives; let’s start planning for it now.

Embrace the Empty Nest as an opportunity for growth, exploration, and rediscovery. Let’s take those baby steps together and create a future that excites us. Remember, every great journey begins with a single step. Choose your step and let’s move forward together into this beautiful new chapter of life!

Wishing you a year filled with inspiration, growth, and joy,

Karla Olson
